Gospel

Hans Christian Jochimsen

A little about me...

I work with gospel because I love what happens when people sing together: shoulders lower, eyes light up, and you can feel the joy of life fill the room. Gospel provides a fantastic sense of community and togetherness, in a world that is often about individual performance.

I build up my choirs and workshops so that everyone can join in and have a good experience – regardless of whether you know sheet music or not, and regardless of whether you have sung before. I use humor a lot because it gets my shoulders down and makes it easier to learn new things.

My choirs
I have had the pleasure of leading Denmark's 2 largest gospel choirs over the past 30 years – first in Aarhus and since 2002 in Copenhagen: Copenhagen Gospel Voices and The Gospel Choir.
Here I gather people across age and experience, and create a space where joy and energy are in focus and where new friendships arise.

My songs
As a songwriter, I have written 200+ songs which are sung by choirs throughout Europe – and also in Japan and the USA. I compose with choirs in mind: melodies that lie well, lyrics that can be sung without feeling artificial, and arrangements where both new and experienced singers can participate.

I prioritize sharing my music online so that it is easily accessible. That's why I put the sheet music for free download on gospel.dk, so that kor can quickly download the material and get started.

International
I teach at workshops throughout Europe. Since 2010 I have been musical director of the European Gospel Festival in Germany, where the choir can be 6500 singers. The large format is an impressive – but my most important task, regardless of whether we are 40 or 6000, is to make it clear and safe to join. To create a space where people can sing together.

Over the years I have been privileged enough to work with some of gospel music's greatest artists: Kirk Franklin, Hezekiah Walker and Fred Hammond.

One of the experiences that stands strong in my memory is when I was the first European to teach at the world's largest gospel festival: GMWA in the USA. For several years I have taught both their large community choir, men's, women's and youth choir, and several of my songs have been recorded there.

I have helped gospel pioneers start gospel choirs and gospel work in Belarus, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. When I work with gospel in Eastern Europe, I experience a unique receptivity to gospel music's message of freedom.

In other words: I love gospel – and I love making people sing!
